Events Calendar by Month 

September 1-30 : September Art Exhibit- NC Estuarium-“East of Highway 17”
Paintings done on location by Washington artist Art Tyndall are featured for the month of September. Art’s love of the area is evident as he focuses on scenes from the farms and waterways of Eastern North Carolina.


September 8-October 27 : NC Estuarium- “Drawing and Painting from Nature”
NC Estuarium- “Drawing and Painting from Nature”- 10:00-12:00- There is a $25 fee for the eight week class. This class explores drawing and watercolor painting basics and emphasizes a natural theme.  Reservations are required and a materials list is available. 252-948-0000. (Adults)


September 10-11 : Growing Greener-NC Estuarium
The North Carolina Estuarium spotlights ways the agricultural community has been reducing its environmental impacts and enhancing its sustainability. Special free programs and information are available all weekend.


September 10 : “Pickling Cucumbers”
Becky Bowling, Master Gardener and owner of Bertie Garden Discount and Bowling Farm Nurseries, will be giving a class on how to make pickles from cucumbers.  She will also teach the canning process for different kinds of vegetables typically grown in home gardens.  Bring canning jars if you have them.  This class is scheduled for September 10 from 1-4pm. September 11-26 : North Carolina Science Festival
River Roving is participating in the North Carolina Science Festival, Sept 11-26. See www.ncsciencefestival.org for more information.


September 16 : “Loggerhead Sea Turtles of the Crystal Coast"- NC Estuarium
1:00-2:00- $2.00 program fee- Jim Craig, co-coordinator of the Emerald Isle Sea Turtle Protection Program speaks of the life cycle of the sea turtle and the sea turtle protection program.  Jim is a retired Professor Emeritus at Virginia Tech and a nature columnist with the Tideland News. The highly illustrated talk discusses sea turtles in general and focuses primarily on the Loggerhead turtles that are the most common species along coastal North Carolina.   Call for reservations. September 18 : Hot Sauce from Your Garden
September 18, 2010 - Polly Carter of Windsor will be giving a class on how to make hot sauce with peppers right out of the garden.  She will work with both hot and mild peppers such as Jalapeño, cayenne, sweet banana, and green pepper, so you have the choice of either making your sauce sizzling hot or mild. Bring small jars or bottles if you have them.  This class is scheduled for September 18 from 1-3pm at the Roanoke/Cashie River Center.  There will be a $5.00 fee to cover cost.  For more information and to sign up for this class, please call the Roanoke/Cashie River Center (252)794-2001


September 24-25 : Paddling and Camping on the Cashie
Come join us for a night of paddling and camping on the Cashie River.  We will be meeting at the Roanoke/Cashie River at 6:30pm. and then travel to San Souci Ferry where we will put in.  From there, we will paddle to Bob and Becky Bowling’s property on the river where we will set up camp. We’ll enjoy dinner cooked on an open fire and afterwards go for a night paddle on the Cashie under a full moon sky.  In the morning, we will pack up and do more paddling further down the river and then come back to our take out point around 12pm to head home.  The cost of the camping trip will be $10.00, which will cover cost of food and drinks for Friday night.  Breakfast will be on your own, so bring granola bars and coffee!!  Canoes and kayaks available for rental if needed. September 28 : Croatoan
Scott Dawson, owner of Croatoan History Museum in Buxton, NC, will be giving a presentation on his book, “Croatoan,” which describes the history of first discovered Native American Indian Village.  He will also talk about the Croatoan Indians culture and what researchers are learning from recent archaeological digs and studies.  This program is scheduled for Tuesday, September 28 from 7-8pm. at the Roanoke/Cashie River Center.  There will be a $2.00 program fee.  For more information on this program, please call the RCRC at (252)794-2001.
